Family Discusses Being Thankful

Robert and his wife, Roberta, were planning a big gathering at their home for Thanksgiving dinner.

Invited guests included Robert’s parents, Rob and Renee; Roberta’s dad and mom, Rance and Roncella; Roberta’s sister, Robin, and Robin’s husband, Rocky; and Robert’s brothers, Roman and Roan.

Robert and Roberta also asked their minister, Pastor Ricky, and his wife, Rachael, to join the family for the festive occasion. Rachael baked four of her famous homemade pumpkin pies. Pastor Ricky baked several of his renowned rhubarb/dark chocolate cakes. His hosts had also asked him to prepare a short devotion about Thanksgiving to share.

Robert and Roberta were anticipating the birth of a new family member, Randie Rose, the couple’s first daughter. Randie Rose was expected to make her long-awaited arrival on the scene in mid-December.

On Thanksgiving Eve, Roberta and Robert were watching television before retiring for the evening. They were also discussing their lives together and the things for which they were thankful.

“I’m so thankful you agreed seven years ago to become my wife,” Robert said. “We’ve had such a wonderful marriage. Every time I look at you, I fall in love with you all over again.”

“It’s been great for me, too,” Roberta acknowledged. “You’re a super husband, and I love you very much. I thank God every day for bringing you into my life.”

“What I’m the most thankful for is the fact that Jesus came into the world about 2,000 years ago to die for my sins,” said Robert.

“Me, too,” Roberta agreed. “It’s hard for me to even imagine the pain He experienced from the pain of thorns on His head, the stripes on His back, and the excruciating suffering of the Cross.”

“I think we should pray a prayer of thanksgiving right now for our daughter,” Robert said. “Why don’t you lead us in prayer, Honey?”

“Sure,” replied Roberta. “Heavenly Father, we thank you right now for Randie Rose, the special daughter you have given us. Help her to be healthy and happy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Little Randie Rose sensed that the time for her to enter the world was drawing very near. “Hello, Mom and Dad,” she said. “I hope you are anticipating my arrival as much as I am.”

“Yes, Dear, we are,” said Roberta. “In fact, we just prayed and thanked the Lord for giving you to us.”

“We were also thanking God for some other things,” said Robert.

“I want to thank the Sovereign Lord for some things, too,” said Randie Rose. “I want to thank God for giving such terrific parents to me.”

She laughed as she added, “I’m also thankful that I am not going to be born with the destiny of being a Thanksgiving turkey! The Thanksgiving turkey is born to be served. But I’ll be born to serve the Lord!”
