The Family Secret(Final Part)

Part 4

"Put yourself in her shoes," I told her. "How would you have acted if someone stole your man and to top it off, to find out you have a kid?"

"Steve broke my heart," Donna said, all choked up. "I loved him."

I could hear the hurt in her voice and I somehow felt her hurt, but there was no pitty for her.

"Steve told me it was a mistake, what we had done. He loved Rose and had intensions of asking Rose to marry him."

I didn't say a word. I just sat and listened. I noticed Holly roller her eyes at me. She then turned to look at Donna.

"Like I had said, this is none of my business and you don't have to answer this," Holly said. "How did you save each other?"

"She's just a lieing bitch, that's all she is!" Phil said, as he drank his beer. "Don't believe a word she says, She's a liar."

None of us seen or heard him coming in. It was as if he was hiding from us. He had one too many. His speech was slurred and he was making me jittery.

"Phil, I don't know how long you've been standing there and how much you heard, but I never told you that I had a daughter Lorraine, because it was the agreement I had made with Rose."

Phil frowned. "Yeah, sure!"

Donna rushed over to Phil and gently rubbed his face. He pushed her hand away. "Please Phil, listen. I'm telling the truth!" Donna sobbed. "They got married a few weeks after, when she found out I was pragnant. Steve talked Donna into marry him." She paused a moment, taking a deep breath. "That's when we met, Phil. I never told you I was pragnant. What man would want another man's baby," she said with a lump in her throat.

"You wouldn't of known, if you didn't ask," he said bluntly.

"I just couldn't risk, maybe losing you." Donna took a deep breath. "I didn't want you to know I was carrying a baby, so I did the disappearing act on you, shortly after we had met."

Phil grunted. "You disappeared for several months," he said, rubbing his chin. "We were hitting it heavy, then you took off on me."

"I had to leave." She bit her lip. "In all the time we were apart, I made sure I kept in touch with you."

Phil gave his wife a nasty look. "Tell me? How could you have possibly lived with yourself, knowing what you had done?"

Donna sighed. "It wasn't easy. I had thought for many months, Rose would never again want anything to do with me and I even thought of committing suicide, but after several months had passed, Rose started to warm up to me. She told me she couldn't have children."

I looked at Donna's sullen face. Anyone could have seen that she was sincere in what she was saying. It made me sad.

Donna looked over at me. "Rose adopted you, Lorraine. She helped me to save face with myself and my family by covering it up with our lie. I helped her by giving her a child that she would of never been able to have. We made a promise to each other, the secret would be ours."

Suddenly I felt shivers going down my spine. I didn't know what to say.

"If you both think about it for a moment," she said, glancing at each of us. "We never intentionally intended to hurt anyone. If anything, the damage back fired to us."

After the secret had come out, nothing was the same anymore. The lie they had kept for all those years had hurt me deeply. I had lost my respect and trust in the people whom I have loved the most.
